Men at Work
1. The lordship of Christ and confidence at work

Introduction

Aim of this devotion is to help lead to confidence/mastery of the realm of work.  This is pleasing to God.  N.B. “work” is not the same as paid employment, this will be developed later.

Centering on Jesus at His Work

Jesus own confidence in the mastery of his work shown by “I have finished the work you gave me to do.” (John 17:4).  This was prior to the end of his earthly ministry.

The basis of Jesus’ work – life confidence is the greatness of the Father.

“My Father is still working and I am also working.” (John 5:17).  “My” indicates intimacy and presence; the Father, for example, is not “in heaven” when he works.

“The Father who dwells in me does his works” (John 14:10).  The Father works in Jesus to bring about his own works.  This is the secret of Jesus’ confidence in his work life.

Jesus as Centre and Lord of our Work

God does his work (Phil 1:6) in and through our lives (which is everything, not just paid employment) through the indwelling of Jesus in us.  It is the presence of Jesus in us (Col 1:27) that assures us that we have the resources in us to enable and empower us to serve the Lord in our work (Col 3:23 –24).

Jesus’ lordship over our working is based on our intimacy with him whose intimacy with the Father empowered him to complete all that he was meant to be and do.
